Independence is our greatest asset

As individuals surrender more control to employers, digital corporations, governments and external parties through technology and coercion - I increase gratitude daily for my independence as a business owner.

As a business owner I get to decide who I work with and how much I get paid for my product or service.

I decide on what I do today, this week, this month and this year.

I decide how many hours I will work, what I work on and where I work.

Beyond baseline government regulation, I am independent and it truly is my greatest asset.

Of course, being in business also includes taking all the responsibility and risk. Dealing with all the people issues, internal and external to the business. Customers, products and services all delivered on time, cost and quality. Not to mention finance, cash flow, taxation and business administration.

But despite all the challenges, I still think it is a fair trade.

Humility and awareness around independence is empowering.

We spend so much of our time complaining, venting and talking about the issues we face in business we forget to reflect on the outcomes.

Remember to regularly take time out to feel and express gratitude for your independence.

Next time you feel like tapping out, remind yourself that you have paid the price for your independence.

Independence is your biggest asset and it isn’t on your Balance Sheet.

People have died for their independence and most will never taste it.

In a constantly changing world, the value of independence increases daily.

Respect it and never take it for granted.

Fight to retain it. You’ve earnt it.

Unrestrained, give us your best work.

Independence is your greatest asset.
